Music from Århus // Music for Århus

Music from Århus

I once heard that, the reason why there are lot of youngster UK bands, is because of the weather.
As it always rains and people stays indoor, young people practice and strum, look outside the window and write down melancholic lyrics. Which, sometimes, turns out to be epic.
As every foreigners coming to Denmark knows – except for Norwegians, Swedish, Eskimos and Siberian population- Danish weather is not to be considered even remotely preferable to its own homecountry probable weather forecast.
Nevertheless, this strange equation
( bad weather : good music = nice weather : let’s go to the beach instead) is likely to be adaptable also to Denmark, and Århus seems to be the proof to it.
A lot of bands pop up every year, and the most talented have the opportunity to performe during the SPOT festival in May.
As I like to go to live gigs, every week I try to find new local bands to go listen to.
Århus, even though it is a small town, provides a wide range of concerts form local bands at really low fares, considered the quality of the music which has been played, and I have been listening so far.

To cite three of the bands I have found to be particularly talented:

Coco Moon

I have been at their concert in the late March 2011.  Still, sometimes I listed to them, waiting for the a new album to come out. In the live performance they played and sang with so much grace together with powerfulness and precision, which is really rare.

The Green Lives

One of the band chosen to be part of Newbees Festival was Green Lives, a band I knew for the song “Anna Lee”, but never seen before live. They have really catchy sound, which doesn’t allow you to stand still . A plus: extravagant fans.

NovemberDecember

Probably the only band I had ever seen live twice. In a month. Sometimes it is really difficult to make good  music by combining a lot of different instruments’ sounds. NovemberDecember does it at best, creating a cosy and magical atmosphere during the all concert. As they announced at their last concert in V58, their new album has been released just now. A mix between Fleet Foxes and Mumford’s and Son, you could say, but clearly there’s more than that. ( Fanny Chays, the shadow in the picture, enjoyed the concert too)

Music for Århus

I came back to Århus, exactly two months ago, after having spent 8 months in my home country. During my Italian stay I used to think a lot to the den smilende by, expecially during the nights while I was driving my no-gears-no-lights bike in the  flat streets of Milan,  listening to my mp3 player on shuffle mode. Some songs reminded me Aarhus so vividly that I collected them in my top ten Århus music playlist . Go check:

1. Such Great Highs – The Postal Service
2. The Shore – Basia Bulat
3. If You Wanna – The Vaccines
4.  Sans Soleil – Miike Snow
5. A Sunday Smile – Beirut
6. Heaven’s on Fire – The Radio Dept.
7. Lose it – Austra
8. Always like this – Bombay Bicycle Club
9.  All you know – Two Doors Cinema Club
10. Young Blood – The Naked and Famous

put them on your phone or mp3 player, drive your bike -safely- around Århus, and just listen to the music.
Do you have any  song which reminds you of Århus?
